LAMAZE BREATHING TECHNIQUE DURING LABOUR: KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES AMONG HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS IN PUBLIC SECTOR HOSPITALS OF MULTAN

The Lamaze breathing technique is a supportive, non-invasive, and non-pharmacologic method that effectively lowers labor discomfort and enhances laboring women's behavioral reactions. The knowledge and practice of frontline healthcare providers, such as women medical officers (WMOs) and registered nurses (RNs), mediate the translation of evidence into practice. The aim of the study is to Assess the knowledge level of women medical officers and registered nurses regarding Lamaze breathing at Public Sector hospitals, Multan, to Assess the Practices regarding Lamaze breathing, among women medical officers and registered nurses at Public Sector hospitals, Multan, and to determine the association of demographic characteristics with the knowledge and practice of participants regarding Lamaz breathing at public sector hospitals Multan. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used to explore knowledge, practice among health care providers in public hospitals Multan. A simple random sample of n=100 was recruited. Self-administered questionnaires for knowledge and practice were used to collect the data. The filled questionnaires were collected and processed for data analysis using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics were used to see knowledge and practice while inferential statistics was used to examine relationship of demographic variables with the knowledge and practice regarding Lamaze. Result: The findings demonstrate that more than half (54%) respondents had inadequate knowledge and just 14% of respondents showed adequate knowledge. Moreover (43%) exhibited inadequate practice and only 18% of respondents reported using good practices. However, qualifications (p =.044), gynecology experience (p =.049) Lamaze training (p <.001) showed significant relationship with knowledge. The practice was found to have a significant relationship with training of Lamaze only (p =.012). The study highlighted a significant number of healthcare providers in public sector hospitals in Multan have inadequate knowledge and practice of the Lamaze breathing technique.
